What an Independence Celebration for Grand Bay in 2010

Grand Bay has lived up to its reputation as the cultural capital of Dominica this Independence celebration 2010. During the season, the community first hosted a memorial for the late Prime Minister Rosie Douglas on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his death. This ceremony took the form of testimonials from people who knew Rosie very well and it included several cultural performances. The memorial was held at Ma Tutu’s Park, Grand Bay.

Following this, the community hosted the cultural semi-final and finals of this year’s Independence celebrations and a number of groups and individuals from Petite Savanne to Pichelin including Dubique and Grand Bay  performed on stage and showed that Dominica’s cultural heritage is in good hands, the hands of the children and youth.

Then on Saturday 16th October, at the Old Fort in Lallay, Mrs. Ignatia Pascal (Teacher Sase) was honoured as First Caribbean International Bank Unsung Hero for her tremendous role in the care of the elderly of Grand Bay through her organization, St. Jerome’s Ministry for the Elderly.

This was followed by the celebration of Heritage Day in Grand Bay on Sunday 24th October. What a celebration that was! The Mass at the Roman Catholic Church was splendid with the church beautifully decorated, the choir sang out heartily, and Father Eustace Thomas gave a superb homily in creole (patois). The entire mass was said in creole and the congregation was dressed in various versions of national wear. It was a really top class performance. In the afternoon, there was an exhibition of art, craft and agro products at the Primary School followed by a luncheon at the Pierre Charles Secondary School. By all reports, the meal was excellent and the service provided by the students of the school was of the highest level. Finally, there was at Ma Tutu’s Park the cultural gala which was a showcase of many cultural expressions from the south, song, dance, story telling, music and poetry. It was a celebration of Dominica’s cultural heritage.

To crown it all,  Miss Nadege Roach, the eighteen year old daughter of John and Monica Roach won the Miss Wob Dwiyet Show. What a successful Independence celebration it has been for Grand Bay and it is fitting that  all these successes would be achieved during the first year of the Parliamentary Representative Mrs. Justina Charles being  the Minister for Culture.

So Grand Bay, keep it up!

Marcus Thomas of Bagatelle constructs dryer under Alec's supervision

We hear much talk about renewable energy but in Grand Bay last week, there was action on the issue. Eight solar fruit dryers were built from Thursday to Saturday last week as approximatley ten people from the south of the island engaged themselves in a training program organized by the Grand Bay Village Council. An enthusiast and researcher in solar energy offered to train Dominicans in the technology of solar dryers. Mr. Alec Gagneau from Europe was visiting Dominica for the past month and conducted training in Roseau and Grand Bay. He conducted the training for three days at the workshop of Mr. Philip Nelson at Geneva. At the end of the training the participants had built eight solar dryers which they hope to put into use immediately.

The whole idea of the solar dryer is to preserve some of our fruits when in abundance for the days when the fruit is no longer available. For example there is much wastage of mangoes when the fruit is in season and after the mango season, it is very scarce. By drying strips of the fruit in an inexpensive way, mangoes can be eaten after the mango season.

The participants who came from Roseau, Bellevue, Bagatelle, Marigot and Grand Bay were challenged to experiment with different fruits and share their results with one another.

At the end of the workshop, participants expressed great satisfaction with the training and they all expected to put their newly acquired skill of solar fruit drying to good use. In addition the building of the solar dryer was another new skill acquired by the participants.

Alec( as he is preferred to be called) is a resident of Switzerland who was invited to visit Dominica by another renewable energy friend who had visited Dominica before and was fascinated by the beauty and natural endowments of the country.
